Brazilian Biotech Startup BioLinker Secures $1.7M to Advance DNA Synthesis and AI Integration in the Amazon

Brazilian biotechnology startup BioLinker has successfully raised $1.7 million in a new funding round as it looks to significantly scale its operations, expand its domestic DNA production capabilities, and venture into artificial intelligence training. The capital injection marks a major milestone for the enterprise, which has steadily established itself as a notable player in Latin America’s synthetic biology sector since its inception nearly six years ago.

The latest investment round was spearheaded by Axcell, a firm that contributed the lion’s share with $1.4 million. In addition to Axcell’s substantial backing, the funding was bolstered by public support from FAPESP, the Research Foundation of the State of São Paulo, which contributed approximately $240,000 through its PIPE Phase 2 program. This blend of private venture capital and public research funding underscores the strategic importance of BioLinker’s technological pursuits, bridging the gap between academic scientific research and scalable industrial application.

Founded in 2018 by a group of ambitious scientists hailing from the University of São Paulo, BioLinker specializes in the development and manufacture of recombinant proteins. Utilizing advanced techniques in synthetic biology and genetic engineering, the company creates products designed to support a wide array of sectors, including academic research, medical and commercial diagnostics, and various industrial applications. By streamlining the production of custom proteins, BioLinker addresses critical supply chain and technological bottlenecks that have traditionally slowed down life sciences development in the region.

BioLinker raises $1.7M to build automated biotech lab in the Amazon

With the newly secured capital, BioLinker is setting its sights on a geographically strategic expansion. The company plans to construct an advanced, automated laboratory facility located at the Amazon BioBusiness Center in Manaus. This upcoming laboratory is designed to leverage cutting-edge robotics to generate vast amounts of biological data at scale. According to the company’s strategic roadmap, this massive influx of biological data will be instrumental in training specialized artificial intelligence models, thereby combining the fields of synthetic biology and machine learning to optimize DNA production and protein engineering within Brazil.

Beyond its technological and infrastructural ambitions, the funding will also enable BioLinker to substantially grow its human capital. The startup intends to double the size of its workforce, scaling its current team from 12 employees to 24. This expansion will encompass a range of specialized roles, bringing in top-tier talent in biotechnology, automation, data science, and laboratory operations to support the company’s broader operational goals.

Despite the successful closure of this $1.7 million milestone, BioLinker’s current funding round remains open. The startup is actively seeking an international strategic investor to support its ongoing global expansion efforts. This broader financial strategy is designed to pave the way for a more substantial Series A funding round, which the company anticipates launching within the next two years as its technologies mature and market reach widens.

Operating on a solid financial foundation, BioLinker already generates recurring revenue through its existing commercial and research partnerships. Company leadership expects that the newly acquired capital, combined with its ongoing revenue streams, will be sufficient to fully fund three years of robust operations, giving the startup the runway it needs to execute its ambitious research, development, and geographical expansion plans without immediate pressure for additional capital.
