Argentine biotechnology startup Giraffe Bio has successfully raised $6.4 million in a seed funding round as it looks to scale its innovative approach to mineral extraction. The investment round was led by Orion Industrial Ventures and saw participation from a prominent group of global and regional strategic investors, including BHP Ventures, Twynam, AIR Capital, and Baruch Future Ventures. This substantial capital injection highlights a growing international interest in applying advanced biotechnology and artificial intelligence to traditional heavy industries, particularly mining, where efficiency and sustainability have become paramount operational concerns.
Founded in 2024 by Alejandro Buffo Sempé and Juan Pablo Fernández, Giraffe Bio operates at the intersection of biology, data science, and heavy industry. The company utilizes a powerful combination of artificial intelligence and biotechnology to engineer specialized biochemical reagents. These advanced reagents are designed to assist mining companies in recovering significantly higher volumes of copper from ore, addressing a critical bottleneck in global metal supply chains. As high-grade copper deposits continue to deplete worldwide, mining operations are increasingly forced to process lower-grade ores, making innovative recovery technologies essential for maintaining economic viability and meeting surging global demand for the metal, which is critical for the global energy transition.

The newly secured $6.4 million in seed funding will be deployed across several core areas to accelerate the company’s commercial and operational trajectory. Giraffe Bio plans to use the capital to significantly increase its production capabilities, allowing the startup to supply larger quantities of its proprietary biochemical reagents. Furthermore, the funds will finance critical industrial-scale trials, enabling the team to validate their technology under real-world mining conditions. In addition to production and testing, Giraffe Bio will expand its ongoing research and development initiatives to refine its AI models and biotechnology platforms, while simultaneously growing its internal team of scientists, engineers, and industry professionals.
Although founded by Argentine entrepreneurs and maintaining strong roots in the region, Giraffe Bio operates extensively in Chile, one of the world’s premier copper-producing nations. This strategic positioning places the startup in close proximity to major mining operations and industry leaders, facilitating direct collaboration and testing opportunities. The company’s innovative potential and regional impact have already garnered high-profile recognition. Notably, Giraffe Bio achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first Latin American startup to be selected for Breakthrough Energy’s prestigious Fellows program, an initiative founded by Bill Gates that supports early-stage innovators developing groundbreaking technologies aimed at addressing climate change and reducing global greenhouse gas emissions.
The participation of global mining heavyweights like BHP Ventures in the seed round underscores the industry’s pressing need for technological solutions that can enhance resource recovery while minimizing environmental footprints. By partnering with established venture funds and industry-backed arms, Giraffe Bio is well-positioned to navigate the complex landscape of industrial deployment. As the startup moves forward with its industrial trials and production scaling, its AI-driven biotechnological solutions could play a pivotal role in shaping the future of copper extraction across Latin America and the global mining sector.
