Buenos Aires Prepares for a Packed Mother’s Day Weekend Filled with Film, Art, Stargazing, and Live Music

As Mother’s Day weekend approaches, Buenos Aires is gearing up for a vibrant cultural schedule that offers residents and visitors a chance to revisit personal and collective memories, explore new immersive worlds, and enjoy the city’s bustling nightlife well into the evening. From long-forgotten family home movies returning to the big screen to interactive comic book exhibitions, vermouth-fueled rooftop stargazing, and an expansive calendar of live music and pop-up dining events, the Argentine capital presents a diverse array of activities tailored to suit every taste.

Whether the goal is to discover culinary collaborations, catch classic cinema retrospectives, or participate in a citywide game night, the weekend offers plenty of options for those looking to make the most of the days ahead. As always, the local cultural calendar provides comprehensive coverage for anyone seeking weekend plans.

Home Movie Day at the Buenos Aires Film Museum

For those looking to take a nostalgic trip into the past, the Buenos Aires Film Museum, located at Agustín Caffarena 51, will host Home Movie Day on October 17 from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Admission to the event is entirely free.

The initiative is an open, collaborative project that encourages community members to bring their homemade or family videos in Super 8mm, 8mm, 16mm, or 9.5mm formats to the big screen. Attendees are welcome to bring any recorded material they wish, ranging from family films and vacation footage to birthday parties, weddings, travel logs, home recordings, or historic records that have been sitting forgotten in closets or boxes for years.

As an annual worldwide celebration dedicated to amateur filmmaking, memory, and family heritage, the event provides a unique opportunity for individuals who no longer possess the necessary projection technology to watch their old homemade films come to life once again.

Las Argies’ Crafty Happy Hour

For travelers, visitors, and expatriates living in Buenos Aires who enjoy combining socializing with hands-on activities, Fare Pinsa & Vermú, situated at Paraguay 3882, will host a special crafting event on Thursday, October 22, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tickets start at approximately US$27 or AR$35,000, with prices varying depending on the chosen payment method.

The monthly crafting gathering organized by Las Argies invites women to share a table with a group of new acquaintances while participating in a creative project. This month’s activity features decorating glass cans using UV DTF stickers, allowing participants to enjoy a traditional happy hour atmosphere while crafting a personalized glass to take home.

No prior crafting experience is necessary, and all required materials are included in the ticket package. Food and drinks are not included in the initial price and are paid directly to the restaurant upon consumption.

Vermouth and Stargazing at Fuerza Bar

Fuerza Bar, located at Dorrego 1409, is looking skyward this weekend with a three-day program combining vermouth and guided stargazing from October 16 to 18, beginning at 7:00 p.m. each evening.

Throughout the month of October, the Centro Cultural Recoleta, located at Junín 1930, is hosting a landmark multisensory exhibition that brings Quino’s iconic comic strip to life for the first time. The interactive experience invites visitors to step directly inside Mafalda’s fictional world, exploring her bedroom, visiting Manolo’s grocery store, and wandering through her familiar neighborhood, which is rendered complete with evocative ambient smells and textures.

The exhibition integrates 360-degree projections, surround sound, interactive screens, virtual reality, and three-dimensional sculptures, accompanied by original musical scores and faithful two-dimensional animations. For an additional fee, visitors can experience "Dreaming of Mafalda," a 10-minute multiuser virtual reality adventure. Groups of up to six people can accompany Sara, a teenage fan, inside the dreams of the beloved characters, witnessing Mafalda work as a United Nations translator, Manolito operate as a business tycoon, and Susanita live out her dream wedding.

Admission prices vary, with weekday tickets ranging from AR$33,600 to AR$57,200, and weekend and holiday tickets priced between AR$55,000 and AR$68,320. Titled En las rutas de Wim Wenders, the series runs from October 15 to 30 at the Sala Leopoldo Lugones within the Teatro San Martín, located at Av. Corrientes 1530. Tickets are priced at AR$12,000.

Organized as part of the 22nd European Film Festival in Argentina, the retrospective presents most films in recently restored 4K prints. The collaborative cultural effort is supported by the Buenos Aires City Theater Complex, the European Union Delegation in Argentina, the German Embassy, and Fundación Cinemateca Argentina.

The lineup includes modern classics such as Paris, Texas, Wings of Desire, and Buena Vista Social Club, the latter of which serves as a fitting cinematic companion to Cuban jazz pianist Roberto Fonseca’s concurrent live performance in the city.
