Argentine biotechnology startup Giraffe Bio has successfully raised $6.4 million in a seed funding round as it looks to scale its innovative approach to mineral extraction. The investment was led by Orion Industrial Ventures and saw strong participation from a notable group of strategic and venture capital investors, including BHP Ventures, Twynam, AIR Capital, and Baruch Future Ventures. The injection of capital marks a significant milestone for the young company, which is positioning itself at the intersection of artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and green mining technology.
Founded in 2024 by Alejandro Buffo Sempé and Juan Pablo Fernández, Giraffe Bio has developed a specialized platform that combines biotechnology with advanced computational tools. The startup creates proprietary biochemical reagents designed specifically to help mining companies recover higher volumes of copper from ore. As global demand for copper continues to surge—driven heavily by the global transition toward renewable energy, electric vehicles, and modern electronics—mining operations are under increasing pressure to maximize efficiency, reduce waste, and extract metals from lower-grade deposits that were previously considered uneconomical to process.
The newly secured $6.4 million seed funding will be deployed strategically across several key areas of the business. Giraffe Bio plans to use the capital to significantly increase its production capacity, carry out large-scale industrial trials with mining partners, expand its ongoing research and development initiatives, and grow its specialized team of scientists, engineers, and industry professionals. By scaling up operations, the startup aims to transition its laboratory-proven solutions into commercial-ready applications capable of delivering measurable economic and environmental benefits to major mining jurisdictions.

Although founded by Argentine entrepreneurs, Giraffe Bio operates extensively in Chile, a country recognized globally as one of the largest and most influential copper producers in the world. Establishing a presence in the heart of South America’s mining belt allows the company to work closely with industry leaders and test its innovations directly within operational environments. This strategic positioning has already garnered international recognition. Notably, Giraffe Bio became the first Latin American startup to be selected for Breakthrough Energy’s prestigious Fellows program, a distinction that highlights the company’s potential to make a meaningful impact on heavy industry emissions and resource efficiency.
The participation of heavyweight investors in this seed round underscores the growing appetite for sustainable technologies within the traditional mining sector. Lead investor Orion Industrial Ventures brings deep expertise in industrial technologies, while BHP Ventures represents the venture arm of BHP, one of the world’s largest natural resources companies. Additional backing from specialized funds like Twynam, AIR Capital, and Baruch Future Ventures provides Giraffe Bio with a diverse network of supporters who understand both the complexities of deep tech development and the operational realities of the global mining industry.
As Giraffe Bio looks ahead, the company aims to solidify its role as a key enabler of sustainable mining practices. With global copper demand projected to rise significantly over the coming decades, innovations that can enhance recovery rates using biological and AI-driven methods are expected to play a crucial role in securing the supply chains necessary for a low-carbon economy. Through its ongoing trials, expanded research, and growing team, Giraffe Bio is preparing for its next phase of growth as it seeks to redefine how critical minerals are extracted across Latin America and beyond.
