We love seeing Latinas make history, and few milestones in recent memory have resonated as deeply across the American legal landscape as the rise of Patricia Guerrero. Stepping into a role of unprecedented magnitude, Guerrero made history as the first Latina to lead the California Supreme Court. Her appointment as the state’s 29th chief justice marked a watershed moment for diversity, inclusion, and authentic Latina representation at the absolute highest levels of California’s influential legal and judicial system.
Guerrero was already no stranger to breaking barriers long before she took the court’s top administrative and judicial position. The trajectory of her judicial career accelerated significantly in March 2022, when Governor Gavin Newsom appointed her as the first Latina associate justice of the California Supreme Court. Following her confirmation, she served on the bench in that capacity before Governor Newsom subsequently nominated her to succeed retiring Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye. Following a thorough confirmation process, she was officially sworn into the historic role in January 2023, assuming leadership of a judicial branch that oversees the largest court system in the nation.
Her remarkable path to the state’s highest court began far from the marble halls of appellate courthouses, rooted instead in the agricultural landscape of California’s Imperial Valley. Raised in the region by Mexican immigrant parents who instilled in her a profound work ethic and a deep appreciation for opportunity, Guerrero learned the value of resilience and dedication at an early age. Long before she was reviewing complex briefs or authoring landmark state opinions, she was working a local grocery store job at the age of 16 to help support her family and fund her early educational aspirations.
That determination propelled her northward to the University of California, Berkeley, where she pursued her undergraduate studies and earned her bachelor’s degree in 1994. From there, she advanced to Stanford Law School, immersing herself in rigorous legal scholarship before earning her Juris Doctor in 1997. Her educational journey equipped her with the technical mastery of the law, but her lived experiences continuously grounded her perspective in the everyday realities of ordinary people striving for a better life.
Throughout her distinguished career, Guerrero has consistently paired her rigorous legal leadership with a steadfast commitment to public service and community advocacy, particularly in supporting immigrant communities navigating the complexities of the American legal system. Early in her professional journey, she served as an assistant U.S. attorney in the Southern District of California, prosecuting federal cases and gaining invaluable trial experience.
Beyond her prosecutorial work, she demonstrated a profound dedication to equal access to justice by joining the Advisory Board of the Immigration Justice Project. This organization works tirelessly to expand immigrants’ access to legal representation and due process within the appellate court system. Recognizing the steep barriers faced by vulnerable populations, Guerrero also provided vital pro bono assistance in complex immigration cases, including meticulous asylum applications that literally meant the difference between safety and persecution for her clients. In addition to her immigration advocacy, she lent her legal expertise to litigating fair housing cases, fighting to ensure that marginalized families could secure safe and equitable living conditions.
Before she was ever elevated to the California Supreme Court, Guerrero built an impressive judicial resume across multiple levels of the state’s court system. She first entered the judiciary when she was appointed as a judge on the Superior Court of San Diego County, serving on the trial bench from 2013 to 2017. In that role, she presided over a wide array of civil and criminal matters, earning a reputation among her peers and litigants alike for her intellect, fairness, and calm judicial temperament. Recognizing her exceptional performance and deep grasp of appellate law, she was later appointed to the Fourth District Court of Appeal, Division One, where she continued to hone her jurisprudence before making the leap to the state Supreme Court.
As chief justice, Guerrero continues to make Latina leadership visible, influential, and respected in every facet of California law. In 2025, she delivered the annual State of the Judiciary address, outlining the ongoing challenges and modernizing innovations within the state court system, while also serving as chair of the California Supreme Court Historical Society to preserve and celebrate the institution’s rich heritage. Her trailblazing contributions have earned widespread acclaim from legal organizations, civil rights groups, and professional associations across the state. Among her recent accolades are La Alianza’s 2025 Trailblazer Award and the California Latino Judges Association’s 2024 Cruz Reynoso Champion of Justice Award, recognizing a career defined by integrity, perseverance, and an unwavering dedication to the rule of law.
