Nearly three years after a high-profile controversy upended her career and sent shockwaves through Hollywood, actress Melissa Barrera is drawing a firm line regarding her future with one of horror cinema’s most lucrative franchises. The Mexican actress, who was abruptly dropped from the upcoming Scream VII following her social media posts concerning the conflict in Palestine, has made it abundantly clear that she knows her worth and is unwavering in her professional and personal boundaries.
In a candid and revealing recent interview with entertainment outlet JustWatch, Barrera addressed the tumultuous chapter of her career, the fallout from her departure, and the singular condition under which she would ever consider stepping back into the shoes of Sam Carpenter. According to the actress, any potential return to the beloved horror franchise would be entirely dependent on a change in corporate leadership, specifically noting that she would only come back if production company Spyglass Media Group were no longer involved with the property.
The statement brings renewed attention to a bitter studio split that occurred in late 2023, a moment that fundamentally altered the trajectory of the ongoing slasher series and sparked intense global debates about freedom of expression, political speech, and accountability within the entertainment industry.
Reflecting on her time in the franchise, Barrera expressed a deep affection for the films and the creative community behind them, even as she condemned the actions of the studio executives who severed ties with her. "I love the franchise," Barrera said during her interview with JustWatch. "I had an amazing time on those movies. But a lot of the hate and the difficulty that I’ve faced in the last years is because the leadership of that company made it a point to label me something that I’m not, and they never apologized, even when I was proven right."
The controversy erupted in November 2023, shortly before principal photography on Scream VII was scheduled to begin. Barrera had utilized her personal social media platforms to share posts commenting on the Israel-Hamas war, expressing pro-Palestinian sentiments and criticizing the humanitarian toll of the conflict. Almost immediately, Spyglass Media Group took swift and decisive action, announcing that the lead actress had been dropped from the sequel.
At the time, Spyglass issued a strongly worded statement to entertainment trade publication Variety to explain their rationale for the termination. "Spyglass’ stance is unequivocally clear: We have zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form, including false references to genocide, ethnic cleansing, Holocaust distortion or anything that flagrantly crosses the line into hate speech," the company stated. The corporate declaration left no ambiguity regarding how the studio interpreted Barrera’s digital activism, effectively categorizing her political commentary as hate speech and antisemitism—an accusation that Barrera has continuously and vehemently denied.
In the wake of that public rebuke, Barrera noted that no apology or retraction has ever been offered by the executives who made the decision to fire her. However, the actress emphasized that an apology at this late stage would not mend the fractured professional relationship or entice her to rejoin the project under the current corporate umbrella.

"Even with an apology, I wouldn’t go back to work with them," Barrera stated firmly. "Not that I’m holding my breath. I don’t think they have that ability. But if the franchise were ever to leave those hands and go into hands that I think honor Wes Craven’s legacy more, I think yeah."
Barrera’s journey with the iconic horror franchise began when she was cast as Sam Carpenter, the complex and resilient protagonist of the fifth installment, titled simply Scream, released in 2022. Directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the film successfully revived the meta-slasher property created by the late Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson, introducing a new generation of characters to face down the legendary Ghostface killer alongside legacy stars like Neve Campbell and Courteney Cox. Barrera reprised her role as Sam Carpenter in Scream VI, released in March 2023, which was a major box office success and cemented her status as a rising star and the anchor of the revitalized franchise.
Her sudden firing from the planned seventh installment triggered a massive creative and public relations crisis for Spyglass Media Group and distributor Paramount Pictures. Just a day after Barrera’s termination became public news, co-star Jenna Ortega—who played Sam’s younger sister, Tara Carpenter, in the previous two films—also exited the project, citing scheduling conflicts related to her work on the hit Netflix series Wednesday. Shortly thereafter, director Christopher Landon, who had been tapped to helm Scream VII, announced that he was also leaving the production, describing the situation as a dream job that had turned into a nightmare.
The cascading departures forced the studio to completely scrap its original script and pivot to a new creative direction, ultimately bringing back original franchise star Neve Campbell—who had sat out Scream VI over a salary dispute—to anchor the seventh film, alongside the return of original writer Kevin Williamson in the director’s chair.
For Barrera, the abrupt end to her tenure in the franchise was not merely a professional setback, but a deeply personal crisis that forced her to confront difficult questions about her identity, her livelihood, and her place in the entertainment industry. The sudden loss of her high-profile role was accompanied by a wave of online vitriol and professional roadblocks that tested her resilience.
"I get fired, and I get blocked from a lot of opportunities taken away from me, and it kind of made me have to reevaluate everything about my life, everything that I thought about myself, my identity," Barrera shared, opening up about the profound psychological and emotional toll of the ordeal. "I literally had, like, an identity crisis."
Despite the intense scrutiny, the professional isolation, and the hardships of the past few years, the actress maintains a perspective rooted in personal growth and self-empowerment. Rather than expressing regret for speaking her mind or engaging in political discourse, Barrera has chosen to view the harrowing experience as a defining moment of authenticity and inner strength.
Looking back on how she navigated the storm, Barrera ultimately expressed a sense of hard-won pride. "I’m so grateful for it," she reflected, "even though it was the hardest time of my life."
