Entravision Introduces AI-Generated Latina Newscaster LIA for Streaming Service AHORA Amid Industry Debate

Over the past couple of years, artificial intelligence has become increasingly integrated into nearly every facet of modern life, seamlessly weaving its way into art, music, the daily workflow, and diverse forms of entertainment. From generating complex digital paintings to drafting corporate memos, technology continues to redefine what machines can achieve alongside human beings. Now, media company Entravision is taking things a step further within the broadcasting industry by introducing an AI-generated Latina newscaster to deliver news and information to Spanish-speaking audiences.

Last month, Entravision officially introduced LIA, an acronym for Latina Inteligencia Artificial, as a new digital team member for AHORA, its newly launched Spanish-language news streaming service. The unveiling took place through a video published on YouTube on September 22, in which veteran newscaster Jorge Viera introduces viewers to LIA, establishing her presence on the platform and allowing her to address the audience directly about her role, her limitations, and her relationship with the human team behind the scenes.

During the introduction, the AI personality wanted to be completely transparent with the viewers tuning into the streaming service. “I want to be absolutely clear with our audience. I am an AI-created newscaster. I’m not a person, and I’m not a journalist… Every word I say is selected, written, discussed, revised, and approved by Entravision’s editorial team,” LIA told viewers in the introductory segment. She went on to emphasize the irreplaceable nature of human labor in the field, adding, “I cannot replace the work of a journalist. I cannot go out into the field, earn a source’s trust, press an official, witness events in a community, or make editorial decisions. That responsibility belongs to journalists like you and the human team behind every piece of information I present.”

Entravision’s overarching goal for deploying LIA is to have the artificial intelligence personality deliver fast, real-time information to viewers across its digital platforms. This includes handling routine updates such as weather reports, explanatory segments on complex topics, data visualizations, and upcoming election results. Crucially, the company has positioned the tool not as a replacement for Latina journalists, but as a technological supplement to the newsroom. According to details provided by the AI personality herself, Entravision’s Caroline Vázquez and LeaAnna Hernandez, working closely alongside the broader editorial team, direct her day-to-day operations and content generation.

However, the introduction of a synthetic Latina broadcaster has not been met without controversy. The decision has already drawn widespread discussion and fierce criticism across various social media platforms, with numerous users and media observers voicing serious concerns. Many critics are calling LIA a direct threat to real Latina journalists who have long fought for representation and stability in a notoriously competitive and demanding industry. Given that Latinas in journalism generally have to work twice as hard to earn their rightful place and recognition in mainstream media, a significant portion of the public sees the implementation of an AI substitute as a painful slap in the face to real Latina journalists who dedicate their lives to rigorous reporting.

At the same time, opinions within media circles are not entirely monolithic. While some view the technology with deep suspicion and apprehension, others believe that tools of this nature could potentially assist journalists. Proponents of this viewpoint argue that automating certain delivery tasks could free up human reporters to focus on deeper investigative work or help amplify more of the community’s untold stories by streamlining the production of data-heavy explainers and rapid updates.

Only time will truly tell whether the integration of LIA helps or hurts Entravision AHORA’s overall news reporting and its standing among viewers. As media organizations grapple with the rapid evolution of artificial intelligence, the broader ethical and professional questions surrounding synthetic media remain largely unresolved, leaving audiences to ponder a fundamental question: Would you trust a news outlet that uses an AI-generated Latina newscaster?
