Brazilian biotechnology startup BioLinker has successfully secured $1.7 million in a new funding round to accelerate its synthetic biology operations, expand its domestic DNA production capabilities, and lay the groundwork for cutting-edge artificial intelligence applications in the life sciences sector. The fresh capital infusion marks a significant milestone for the firm, which has steadily established itself as a notable player in Latin America’s evolving biotech landscape since its inception six years ago.
The funding round was spearheaded by Axcell, a prominent investment firm, which contributed $1.4 million to the enterprise. Additional financial backing came from the São Paulo Research Foundation, known as FAPESP, which provided approximately $240,000 through its competitive PIPE Phase 2 program. This specialized funding mechanism by FAPESP is designed to support innovative small businesses in translating academic research and advanced technological developments into marketable commercial products, aligning closely with BioLinker’s scientific trajectory.
Founded in 2018 by a group of forward-thinking scientists hailing from the University of São Paulo, BioLinker specializes in the development and manufacturing of recombinant proteins. Utilizing advanced techniques in synthetic biology and genetic engineering, the company creates sophisticated biological components and tools designed to support critical sectors such as scientific research, clinical diagnostics, and diverse industrial applications. By engineering proteins with high precision, BioLinker addresses a vital demand for reliable, high-quality biological inputs within the region, reducing reliance on expensive imported materials and bolstering local scientific self-sufficiency.
With the newly acquired capital, BioLinker has outlined an ambitious expansion strategy centered around infrastructure development and technological innovation. A primary initiative involves the construction of a highly advanced, automated laboratory situated at the Amazon BioBusiness Center in Manaus. This strategic geographic positioning places the startup within a vibrant hub of biodiversity and technological development, allowing the company to leverage the unique regional ecosystem while contributing to the technological advancement of Northern Brazil.

The upcoming facility in Manaus is designed to operate with a high degree of automation, utilizing state-of-the-art robotics to generate vast amounts of biological data at scale. This data generation capability is a critical component of BioLinker’s broader vision: training advanced artificial intelligence models. By combining high-throughput robotics with machine learning, the startup aims to streamline the discovery and production of biological molecules, unlocking new efficiencies and capabilities in genetic engineering and DNA production across Brazil.
In tandem with its physical and technological expansion, BioLinker is also focusing on human capital. The startup plans to double its current workforce, growing its team from 12 employees to 24. This workforce expansion will encompass a range of specialized roles, including biotechnology researchers, software engineers, data scientists, and laboratory technicians, thereby fostering high-value employment opportunities and nurturing local scientific talent.
Despite the successful closure of this latest financial injection, BioLinker’s funding journey is far from over. The investment round remains actively open, and the company is currently engaged in strategic discussions with international investors. Leadership is seeking a strategic global partner to help guide and support its ongoing international expansion efforts, laying a solid foundation for a much larger Series A funding round anticipated within the next two years.
From a financial standpoint, BioLinker enters this growth phase on stable footing. The company already generates recurring revenue through its existing commercial operations, demonstrating clear market demand for its recombinant proteins and synthetic biology solutions. Management expects that the combination of its current revenue streams and the newly secured $1.7 million capital will comfortably fund three full years of continuous operations, providing the runway necessary to execute its ambitious research, automation, and scaling objectives without immediate financial pressure.
