In a landmark moment honoring decades of visionary leadership and unwavering dedication to educational equity, the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities inducted its longest-serving president and CEO, Antonio R. Flores, Ph.D., into the prestigious HACU Hall of Champions. The induction ceremony, which took place on October 31, 2026, marked a deeply emotional and celebratory milestone for leaders, educators, and advocates gathered to recognize a transformative chapter in American higher education.
The special recognition celebrated Dr. Flores for an extraordinary tenure spanning 30 years at the helm of the organization. Over three decades, his tireless advocacy, strategic foresight, and relentless pursuit of academic opportunity have profoundly reshaped the landscape of higher education. His work has directly benefited countless students attending Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs), emerging HSIs, and a diverse network of member colleges and universities across the United States.
Under his stewardship, HACU has grown from a burgeoning advocacy group into a powerful national force, championing the needs of institutions that educate a rapidly growing segment of the nation’s student population. The Hall of Champions induction serves as a permanent tribute to his monumental contributions, cementing his legacy as a titan of educational leadership and civil rights advocacy in the academic sphere.
The celebratory induction also heralds a significant transition period for the organization. President Flores will officially retire from his role at the conclusion of the conference, closing a definitive chapter in HACU’s history. As the organization bids farewell to its defining leader, leadership will transition to David A. Ortiz, who will step in as interim president and CEO. Ortiz is slated to guide the association and maintain its strategic momentum until a comprehensive national presidential search has officially concluded.
