Becky G, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and BMI Lead Latin Music’s Latest Milestones in Mental Health, Advocacy, and Culture

From career milestones and community-driven initiatives to major industry honors, the Latin music world continues to experience a wave of impactful and uplifting moments. Editors at Billboard have highlighted several key developments shaping the cultural landscape, ranging from open discussions on mental health to groundbreaking songwriter camps and prestigious upcoming accolades.

Becky G Opens Up About Identity and Mental Health at Project Healthy Minds Event

Bringing Project Healthy Minds’ World Mental Health Day Festival to a powerful close in New York City, Mexican American superstar Becky G offered an intimate and reflective conversation on identity, creativity, and mental health. Moderated by NBC News correspondent Morgan Radford at Spring Studios, the panel provided the singer with a dedicated space to discuss the realities of growing up in the public eye, protecting her personal peace, and learning how to share her story on her own terms.

Throughout the conversation, the artist addressed the heavy expectations often placed on public figures and why she rejects traditional definitions of stardom. She emphasized that striving for an unrealistic standard of perfection does a disservice to both artists and their supporters.

"The whole concept of being a role model is to model this idea of perfection, and I don’t think that is real at all," Becky G told the attentive audience. "Instead of being a role model, I’ve always felt the responsibility to be a real model, which means I’m not going to have all the answers. I’m not going to get it right every single time."

In addition to discussing her philosophy on public life, she spoke candidly about her personal healing journey, the role of therapy in her life, and the importance of family support. Reflecting on her path to self-discovery, she noted the inner work required to build her artistic persona, sharing, "I had to become the person that I needed most, and that’s when Becky G came to be."

The appearance arrived just ahead of her scheduled participation in Billboard’s Latin Music Week, where she is slated to take part in a high-profile Superstar Q&A session.

BMI Creates Space for Women Songwriters in Música Mexicana

While individual artists continue to advocate for wellness and personal growth behind the scenes, organizations are actively working to reshape the industry’s creative infrastructure. Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI) recently turned its focus toward championing female creatives within the traditional realms of música mexicana, a genre that has historically been dominated by male artists, songwriters, and producers.

Lilibert Patron, BMI’s associate director of creative for Latin, emphasized the necessity of these targeted initiatives in a statement highlighting the changing dynamics of the genre.

"Música mexicana has historically been a male-dominated field, making it more important than ever to champion the women creatives who are shaping its future," Patron said. "Las Compositoras+ is about fostering community and creating space for connection and collaboration."

The four-day songwriting retreat, announced in late September and held earlier this month in Los Angeles, brought together a diverse group of talented women to write, connect, and develop new material for potential commercial placements. Led by renowned singer-songwriter Erika Vidrio, the intensive camp began at the Fender offices before relocating to a creative workspace in a Bel Air residence.

The participants included Damaris Bojor, Lorena Cabral, Tania Dominguez, Poe Leos, MXKA, Marián Oviedo, Jacqie Rivera, and Adriana Ríos. By bringing these voices together, the initiative aims to build a stronger collaborative network and increase representation for women behind the biggest hits in the genre.

Lin-Manuel Miranda to Receive iHeartRadio’s Corazón Latino Award

Lin-Manuel Miranda has been named as the recipient of the 2026 iHeartRadio Corazón Latino Award, an honor he will accept during the upcoming iHeartRadio Fiesta Latina at Miami’s Kaseya Center.

That special performance will feature guest appearances by Anthony Ramos, Leslie Grace, and Howie D of the Backstreet Boys, with the main event broadcasting live across iHeartRadio’s network of Latin stations nationwide.
