For nearly three decades, Armando Pérez—better known to the world as Pitbull—has given everything to his audience. From his high-octane global stadium tours and high-energy stage performances to inescapable anthems celebrating late-night escapades like "Hotel Room Service" and "I Know You Want Me (Calle Ocho)," the Grammy-winning superstar has lived his professional life almost entirely in the public eye. Yet, for all his chart-topping bravado and ubiquitous presence in pop culture, the man behind the moniker has maintained a famously strict boundary when it comes to one specific part of his life: his family.
In a candid and revealing cover story for Billboard, the iconic artist opened up—at least a little bit—about his life offstage, explaining the deeply deliberate reasons why he fiercely shields his children from the relentless glare of celebrity culture. Far from a casual choice, Pitbull’s decision to keep his family out of the headlines is rooted in a profound sense of parental responsibility and a desire to give his kids a semblance of normalcy that he believes they are not yet equipped to handle.
Protecting the Next Generation from the Spotlight
Reflecting on his deep affection for his children, Pitbull expressed immense pride in watching them grow, noting how much inspiration he draws from them in his daily life.
“I love them all deeply, I’m very proud of them and I love to see kids grow, characters, what they do, how they do it, and at this point most of my ideas in music come from the kids,” he shared during the interview.
However, the artist—who playfully describes himself as the "wild card" in his children’s lives and maintains a policy of not publicly detailing exact numbers when it comes to his family, confirming only that he has "a lot of kids"—firmly believes that fame is a heavy burden best carried by adults who have chosen it. According to the rapper, loving something means protecting it from forces that could harm it, a philosophy he applies directly to shielding his family from public scrutiny.
“When my kids get to a certain age, which some are, and they want to make their own decisions as far as how they want to live their life and how they want to welcome the world to it, that’s on them,” Pitbull explained.
The rapper’s cautious stance is shaped by a protective instinct born from the realities of modern celebrity culture. He worries about the unintended consequences of fame bleeding into everyday environments like schools, where children should be free to form genuine relationships without external pressures.
“Show me your friends and I’ll show you future. So that’s why I’m very private on what I do, so I don’t wanna put them in my world ’cause they’re not built for it yet,” he said, emphasizing his duty as a father. “It’s my responsibility as a parent to protect them. So, if I put you in my world and now you go to school and everybody’s like, ‘Oh, ’cause you’re Pitbull’s kid’… How are you gonna ever know who’s your friend? They don’t know.”
Navigating Anonymity and the Rules of the Real World
Living in Miami offers a unique advantage for the family’s privacy. Because the surname Pérez is exceptionally common throughout the vibrant South Florida metropolis, the rapper notes that people are far less likely to easily connect the dots regarding his children’s identities at school or out on the street. That layer of local anonymity, combined with his strict privacy boundaries, helps keep unwanted attention at bay. “I protect them because I love them,” he added simply.
Despite keeping a low profile, his children are enthusiastic supporters of his career. Pitbull noted that his kids "love it" and completely "lose their mind" whenever they see him performing intensely in music videos or commanding a massive stage.
Yet, raising children in the shadow of a global superstar requires unique parenting strategies—including, as Pitbull jokingly points out, teaching them how to navigate the complexities of privacy. Noting the comedic irony of parenting, he remarked that while parents generally teach their children to always tell the truth, his unique circumstances require him to teach them "how to lie about the truth."
For instance, if someone casually asks the children where they live or where they spent their vacation, the pre-programmed answer they have been taught is always a definitive "no." When it comes to social media, the boundaries are equally strict. Pitbull maintains that social media is largely a no-go zone for his younger children, though he reiterates that the older ones have reached an age where such decisions belong entirely to them.
Naturally, granting older teenagers autonomy comes with traditional teenage consequences. Pitbull laughed as he explained his hands-off policy should they ever court controversy online: if they choose to make that public leap and subsequently cause a stir, "don’t call me." Similarly, if a post goes sideways because they chose to share something they should not have been doing, his advice to them is straightforward: "Just get ready to own it."
At the same time, the self-described "variable"—the fun, adventurous father—remains eager to encourage youthful exploration. He describes himself as the first person to tell them to step out, experience life, and "go get in a little bit of trouble."
Continuing a Legacy in Music and Live Performance
While offering rare insight into his personal philosophy as a father, Pitbull remains as creatively active as ever. The conversation surrounding his family life coincides with the release of his 14th studio album, Pitcoin. The star-studded project features an impressive array of high-profile collaborations with major artists including Enrique Iglesias, Lil Jon, Jason DeRulo, Zion, Akon, Bon Jovi, and Ne-Yo, showcasing his enduring ability to bridge genres and unite diverse musical talents.
Looking ahead, the international icon is slated to take the stage as a featured speaker during the Superstar Q&A at the upcoming 2026 Billboard Latin Music Week. The premier industry event is scheduled to return from October 19 to 22 at the Faena Forum in Miami Beach, bringing together artists, executives, and fans to celebrate the ongoing global impact of Latin music.
