BOSTON — In a sunlit Boston home filled with warmth, laughter, and the rich aromas of traditional island spices, Beatriz Santiago is right where she belongs. Surrounded by her husband and two children, the Puerto Rican-born content creator radiates an infectious energy that instantly draws people in. It is this authentic charisma, paired with a deep-rooted passion for her heritage, that has captured the hearts of hundreds of thousands of followers on Instagram and TikTok, transforming her into a prominent culinary influencer.
Yet, the true magic of Santiago’s platform lies not in the pursuit of online perfection, but in raw, unvarnished authenticity. Her journey to becoming a beloved digital storyteller was forged through resilience, early independence, and an unwavering commitment to the flavors of her homeland.
Growing up as the oldest of eight children in a household marked by the heavy shadows of domestic violence, Santiago bore witness to immense challenges from a tender age. Despite the turbulence and hardships that defined her early years, her mother ensured that one constant remained: a daily, homemade meal rooted in traditional Puerto Rican cuisine. Those modest yet flavorful dishes laid the psychological and emotional foundation for what would eventually become Santiago’s life’s work.

Between the ages of 14 and 18, Santiago navigated the unpredictable terrain of foster homes and youth shelters. It was during this turbulent period of adolescence that she took her first tentative steps into the kitchen, driven by an acute nostalgia for the comforting tastes of home. While institutional programs offered a revolving door of unfamiliar meals, Santiago actively volunteered for chores, particularly cooking and cleaning. At one youth shelter, a chef named Ricky recognized her innate enthusiasm and invited her to cook alongside him for the other children.
Her culinary education expanded organically under the guidance of a foster mother who also hailed from Puerto Rico. It was under this watchful eye that Santiago mastered the fundamentals of island cooking, from perfecting white rice and beans to attempting her very first batch of fried chicken completely on her own at age 17—an ambitious endeavor that she now recalls with an amused laugh, noting that the chicken was still raw on the inside.
When she gave birth to her first child at the age of 20, Santiago faced a new kind of urgency. With a young family to feed, cooking ceased to be merely an emotional outlet and became an absolute necessity, forcing her to practice, refine, and deepen her repertoire.

Over the years, necessity blossomed into a profound passion. Santiago never stopped striving to elevate her craft, continually guided by the sensory memories of her mother’s cooking. Reflecting on her family history, she notes that her mother, born in the Puerto Rican countryside, learned the culinary arts from her own grandmother, relying heavily on fresh ingredients harvested straight from the family garden.
"My mom is an excellent cook. She always used a lot of herbs, everything was organic because that’s how she grew up. Her food was delicious, even with a few ingredients," Santiago shares. Inspired by those wholesome roots, she developed a dedication to preparing meals entirely from scratch, consciously steering away from processed foods in favor of traditional, wholesome methods.
The digital chapter of her story began in 2020, when her daughter set up a TikTok account for her. The platform instantly opened up a vast new world, allowing Santiago to share her love for food with a global audience while fulfilling her deep-seated desire to help others. For Santiago, the kitchen is much more than a workspace; it is a medium for emotional expression. "Cooking is my love language. Every time someone comes to my house, I love making food for them and seeing the reaction in their faces when they taste something I made," she explains.

That dedication to connection recently came full circle when she successfully rebuilt her relationship with her mother after years of physical and emotional distance. Supported and encouraged by her mother, who frequently tells her that she cooks just like her great-grandmother, Santiago feels a renewed sense of purpose. "Our connection is definitely through food," she says with joy.
Choosing a Healthy Diet, Always
For Santiago, curating the best possible ingredients for her family is far more than a culinary preference; it is a deliberate strategy to safeguard her children’s long-term health and well-being. She views grocery shopping and meal preparation as daily acts of self-respect and familial devotion.
"I invest a lot in the food I buy daily. I think about my kids and my husband—we are only getting older, not younger. Why wait when we have the chance right now to make good health choices?" she asks. According to Santiago, embracing a healthier lifestyle does not require drastic sacrifices, but rather a series of mindful, deliberate decisions. "Sometimes, you just need someone to inspire you to take care of yourself and others; loving and respecting yourself, as well as making healthy food choices, go hand in hand. It’s a small extra step—just 30 more seconds—to make the right decisions when choosing your daily meals."

To maintain the authenticity of her dishes, Santiago regularly shops at local Latino supermarkets across Boston, ensuring that her ingredients remain fresh and true to her cultural roots. She firmly believes that traditional recipes can easily be adapted for better nutrition without sacrificing flavor. "You can swap ingredients to make any recipe more nutritious. You just need to learn how to do it properly so it works. Some herb combinations can do magic," she affirms.
Yuca Empanadas: A Nutritious Delight
Maintaining a diet low in carbohydrates, fats, and sugars is an essential daily practice for Santiago, largely driven by her diagnosis of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Because diet plays a critical role in managing the condition and enhancing overall quality of life, she continually seeks creative ways to reinvent traditional comfort foods. Lean ground turkey has emerged as a staple in her kitchen, serving as a versatile protein source for numerous family recipes. "I use it in several dishes, always seasoning it well and adding a bit of tomato sauce to keep it moist—it turns out delicious," she notes.
As part of her ongoing creative collaborations, Santiago partnered with the JENNIE-O® Turkey brand to develop a unique, health-conscious twist on a Caribbean favorite: yuca empanadas stuffed with seasoned ground turkey. "I love yuca. Because of my condition, I set out to create something fun and tasty," she explains.

For Santiago, the act of cooking demands the same emotional investment as any other creative endeavor. She approaches her kitchen workspace with a combination of boldness, enthusiasm, and immense patience. "I put on some music. I need to feel optimistic, and I need to feel a lot of love. I pour all my best positive feelings into what I prepare, and I take my time," she says.
With her trademark smile, Santiago offers a final piece of advice to home cooks navigating their own culinary journeys: patience, kindness, and intention are everything. "Put your spirit, your mind, and your heart into the act of cooking for your loved ones," she advises, before closing with the simple phrase that signs off every single one of her digital broadcasts: "Always cook with love."
