The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities recently brought together educational leaders, industry experts, and students to examine the profound transformation reshaping higher education and the modern workforce. Holding its prominent Town Hall event titled "Ready or Not: Thriving in the New Age of AI" on November 2, 2025, the organization placed artificial intelligence at the center of discussions regarding the future of academic institutions, particularly for Hispanic-Serving Institutions across the United States.
The high-profile panel discussion was expertly moderated by Audrey Stewart, head of operations for a private equity-backed company, who guided a dynamic conversation addressing the multifaceted realities of artificial intelligence in modern society. The panel featured a distinguished group of leaders representing diverse sectors of education and industry, including Manhattanville University President Frank Sanchez, Los Angeles Community College District Chancellor Alberto J. Román, and Pearson Vice President of Digital Product Daniel Altabello. Together, these speakers explored the vast array of opportunities, complex challenges, and overall transformative impact that artificial intelligence continues to exert across teaching, learning, student success, and long-term workforce preparation.
With a dedicated focus on Hispanic-Serving Institutions, the dialogue closely examined critical themes surrounding AI ethics, responsible innovation, and the implementation of thoughtful guardrails. The panelists emphasized that as artificial intelligence becomes deeply integrated into academic environments, institutions must proactively establish frameworks designed to protect students, local communities, and the integrity of academic systems while simultaneously expanding opportunities for historically underrepresented populations. The speakers noted that navigating this technological shift requires a careful balance between embracing rapid innovation and safeguarding equity, privacy, and academic rigor.
Beyond traditional panel discussions, the Town Hall actively highlighted the tangible ways students are already putting artificial intelligence into practice across contemporary curricula. In a powerful showcase of student ingenuity and technical capability, several students presented their innovative artificial intelligence projects directly from the main stage, offering attendees a firsthand look at how emerging technologies are being harnessed to solve real-world problems. In addition to the main stage presentations, a wide variety of other student-led projects were prominently featured throughout the room, creating an interactive environment where conference attendees could explore, engage, and connect directly with the creators about their groundbreaking work.
The event also featured important remarks from institutional partners and sponsors. Tonantzin Oseguera, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Engagement at the University of California, Merced, delivered official partner and sponsor remarks on behalf of a prominent collective of institutions, including UC Merced, UC Davis, UC Santa Cruz, UC San Diego, and UC Riverside. Her address underscored the collective commitment of these major research universities to supporting student success, fostering innovation, and addressing the challenges and opportunities presented by emerging technologies within higher education.
The engaging Town Hall session served as a cornerstone event within the broader framework of HACU’s 40th Annual Conference. Centered around the milestone theme "40 Years of Championing Higher Education Success: One Graduate at a Time," the landmark conference took place from November 1 through November 3, 2025, in Aurora, Colorado. For four decades, HACU has served as a vital champion for academic institutions dedicated to Hispanic student success, and this year’s conference demonstrated how the organization continues to look forward by addressing the most pressing technological frontiers facing the next generation of college graduates.
