Christian Nodal Joins YouTube’s Billion Views Club With ‘No Te Contaron Mal’

Christian Nodal has officially entered rarefied air on YouTube. The regional Mexican music superstar has secured his second entry into the elite YouTube Billion Views Club, as the official music video for his 2018 smash hit “No Te Contaron Mal” has surpassed the monumental milestone of one billion views.

Directed by the creative team of Omar Torres and Victor Zambrano, the visually vibrant and narrative-driven music video has continued to resonate with millions of fans worldwide years after its initial release. With this latest achievement, “No Te Contaron Mal” joins Nodal’s previous chart-topping phenomenon, “Adiós Amor,” which successfully cleared the one-billion-views threshold back in 2020. The milestone underscores the global enduring appeal of Nodal’s signature sound and his massive digital footprint, cementing his status as one of the most streamed and watched regional Mexican artists of his generation.

Originally released as part of Nodal’s sophomore studio album, Ahora, which dropped in 2019, “No Te Contaron Mal” was crafted by prolific producer and songwriter Edgar Barrera. Upon its commercial release, the track immediately resonated with audiences and dominated Latin radio charts. It notably spent an impressive 38 consecutive weeks sitting proudly atop Billboard’s Regional Mexican Airplay chart. The song’s critical and commercial dominance did not stop there; it went on to earn prestigious accolades, including a Latin Grammy Award, and later captured the title of Regional Mexican Song of the Year at the BMI Latin Awards, further validating its widespread cultural impact.

The Origins of a Modern Regional Mexican Classic

The story behind the creation of “No Te Contaron Mal” is just as remarkable as its chart success. Reflecting on the track’s origins, Edgar Barrera shared how the song laid the foundation for both a lasting musical collaboration and a deep personal friendship with the young artist.

Barrera recalled that he first sought out Nodal early in the rising star’s career, shortly after the breakout success of “Adiós Amor.” Eager to see what they could create together, Barrera reached out to propose a studio session. Through a mutual friend, the songwriter flew out to Guadalajara, Jalisco, in the summer of 2018 to meet Nodal in person. From there, the pair embarked on an impromptu road trip to a remote town called Jalpa, a location uniquely isolated by a complete lack of internet and cell phone connectivity.

That very same day, stripped of modern digital distractions, the two musicians sat down to write what would become a career-defining track. Barrera picked up his guitar as evening fell, prompting Nodal to open up and share a deeply personal story from his life. The song, which weaves a compelling tale of heartbreak and infidelity, was remarkably written in just 30 minutes. Barrera noted that he knew instantly the song would evolve into something extraordinary because of how organically and authentically it was born.
