Brazilian biotech startup BioLinker secures $1.7 million to scale DNA synthesis and AI model training in the Amazon

Brazilian biotechnology startup BioLinker has successfully raised $1.7 million in a new funding round as it looks to significantly expand its operational footprint, scale up its synthetic biology capabilities, and advance its cutting-edge initiatives in artificial intelligence. The recent capital injection is anchored by strategic financial backing from venture firm Axcell, which contributed $1.4 million to the round. Additional support came from the São Paulo Research Foundation, known as FAPESP, which provided approximately $240,000 through its PIPE Phase 2 program, a specialized funding mechanism designed to foster innovative research and development within small businesses and high-growth technology enterprises across the region.

Founded in 2018 by a team of visionary scientists and researchers hailing from the prestigious University of São Paulo, BioLinker specializes in the development and manufacture of high-quality recombinant proteins. By leveraging advanced techniques in synthetic biology and genetic engineering, the company creates sophisticated biological components and solutions that serve critical functions across a wide range of sectors. Its diverse product portfolio and technological applications directly support scientific research, clinical and commercial diagnostics, and various industrial manufacturing processes, positioning the young company as a versatile player in the burgeoning Latin American life sciences ecosystem.

With the newly secured capital now flowing into the business, BioLinker has mapped out an ambitious expansion strategy centered on technological innovation and geographic diversification. A primary focus of the funding will be directed toward the construction of a state-of-the-art, highly automated laboratory facility. This new installation will be strategically located at the Amazon BioBusiness Center, situated in the city of Manaus. By establishing a presence in this unique region, BioLinker aims to harness local resources while contributing to the technological advancement of the area.

BioLinker raises $1.7M to build automated biotech lab in the Amazon

The upcoming Manaus facility is designed to operate with a high degree of automation, utilizing advanced robotics to generate biological data at scale. This large volume of precise biological data is a crucial asset for BioLinker, as it will be directly utilized to train and refine complex artificial intelligence models. By integrating robotics, synthetic biology, and machine learning, the company aims to optimize its workflows and significantly expand its capacity for DNA production within Brazil, reducing the country’s historical reliance on imported biological materials and specialized components.

In tandem with its physical expansion and technological upgrades, BioLinker is also preparing for a significant scaling of its internal workforce. To successfully execute its multifaceted development plans, operate the new automated laboratory, and manage its expanding portfolio of research and commercial projects, the company intends to double the size of its team. Plans are currently underway to grow its current headcount of 12 employees up to 24 professionals, bringing in top-tier talent in fields such as molecular biology, automation engineering, data science, and artificial intelligence.

Despite the successful closure of this latest $1.7 million injection, BioLinker’s current funding round remains open to strategic opportunities. Company leadership is actively seeking a qualified international investor to come on board and support its broader global expansion initiatives. This ongoing fundraising effort is viewed as an important stepping stone ahead of a planned Series A funding round, which the startup anticipates launching within the next two years as it reaches subsequent commercial and operational milestones.

Financially, BioLinker enters this growth phase on stable footing. The company already generates consistent recurring revenue from its current commercial activities and market offerings. According to leadership projections, the newly acquired capital is robustly positioned to fully fund the startup’s operations and strategic initiatives for the next three years, providing the runway necessary to transition its technological platforms from development to widespread commercial implementation.
